CHAPTER 31
PREPARING FOR BATTLE
Daniel arrived at his hotel room restless, even after walking along the harbor for almost two hours. He threw his jacket on the bed and glanced at the digital clock on the nightstand. He sighed. In less than twelve hours he would meet with Paul and the board. He wasn’t close to being prepared, but surprisingly he wasn’t anxious and didn’t know exactly why.
He opened his computer to find Paul’s email and half a dozen documents outlining BeyondYou’s financial history, sales projections, product pipelines, and an elaborate report listing the major vulnerabilities they were facing as nervous investors rethought their partnership with BeyondYou. “We have the green light to use one of MonikerTech’s war rooms for tomorrow’s board meeting. Be ready for at least one curve ball. Morgan is coming.”
Daniel laughed. Days ago, he would have been salivating over all the data and devising a strategy to showcase his ability and to put Morgan in his place. He might have even been fine-tuning his PowerPoint slides to dazzle investors with his knowledge. But now, the thought seemed ludicrous. He changed into a tee-shirt and gym shorts and walked to the window.
They chose me, for goodness sake. It was silly to think he could impress the board on a few days’ notice. They knew what they were getting. They came to me—whatever their initial motives were—they came to me.
Michael’s words echoed in his mind.
“I can’t wait to see what you’ll choose to do.”
Daniel opened the window, but the unseasonably humid air increased the feeling of stuffiness. He turned on the air conditioning, then sat on the bed and opened his computer. He started to draft an email to Chris, hoping she’d agree to meet him at MonikerTech as early as possible, but he quickly deleted the draft. It was almost midnight, and there was no way she’d get it in time. He thought of calling Lynda, but he decided he didn’t want to retell the whole story since so much had changed since the last time they’d spoken. Instead, he sent a quick text message: “Love you. Will call tomorrow.”
He got up and paced the room. A surge of energy came over him as he realized everything he needed was already inside him—and inside the red binder he’d gotten from Tammy. He opened a bottle of water from the mini fridge and sat in the large leather chair near the window. He turned to page sixteen, knowing he would find the case study he should have read years ago. In His Own Words: Daniel Reed Redefines “Beyond You” and Launches BeyondYou, Inc. Ahead of the Competition.
“Unbelievable!” Daniel chastised himself over and over again as he read and reread the case study—which was more like a business memoir. Like a racehorse whose blinders had been finally removed, he could see how much he had missed.
